UDHAMPUR, June 8: Drawing the attention of National Green Tribunal towards the dumping of all city waste at Tawi River near Jakhani Udhampur, from where drinking water is supplied to people of the area, former MLA and president Panthers Party, Balwant Singh Mankotia today sent a memorandum to the Chairman NGT in this concern.
In the memorandum, Mankotia explained the serious issue of dumping all city waste at Tawi River, Kheri near Jakhani Udhampur from last 4 years which is making environment polluted and putting general public at greater health risk. “Dumping station is hardly 500 meter from the city and adjoining the Jammu Srinagar National Highway from where the tourists of all over India travel through there which also makes mockery of Swachh Bharat in Udhampur,” the memorandum further says.
Highlighting seriousness of the issue, Mankotia sought intervention of the NGT into the matter and take cognizance of the same. “Panthers Party is deeply concerned over this issue and many times, protest dharnas were staged regarding this but nothing has been done yet,” he said adding that making the environment unhealthy for the locals by dumping the waste was also the violation of Indian Constitutional Provision of Article 21, which assures the citizens of India the right to a healthy environment.
Mankotia appealed to Chairman NGT to probe the matter expeditiously and make necessary action to the problem.
