JAMMU, Nov 22: President of All India Jat Maha Sabha (AIJMS) Choudhary Manmohan Singh today reiterated demands of the Jat community including OBC status to Jats, one time settlement of the displaced community members and justice to farmers of the community whose land chunks have come under border fencing.
He was speaking during a day-long convention of the AIJMS held here at Kunjwani Langar. Manmohan Singh said despite nearly dozens of states giving the status of OBC to Jats, the community has been denied this benefit in Jammu and Kashmir, thus hindering the progress and upliftment of Jats in the region.
Singh said during the wars of 1947, 1965 and 1971, the then Government of J&K has provided land chunks to migrated Jats. “Only possession was given but the ownership rights were not given at that time which has become necessary today and therefore Government should not waste more time in giving this relief to people.
He also demanded one time settlement of relief package announced by PM Narendra Modi for the displaced persons. He said that since the issue is decades old therefore there are many families which are not in the possession of documents stipulated for the relief, therefore, it is appealed to the concerned department to ease out formalities so that all the genuine Jat families could get their due share of relief.
The AIJMS president also raised the issue of farmer community whose agriculture land has come under border fencing and as a result they could not continue farming. He demanded that either adequate compensation be provided to the affected tillers or alternate land is provided to them to deliver justice.
Later in the meeting, a Jammu District Committee was constituted in which Sunil Choudhary was unanimously elected as president of the Jat Maha Sabha while Kamal Randhawa was elected as general secretary, Vijay Singh Pujwal as senior vice president, Ch Ram Paul, Ch Vijay Singh, Baljeet Singh Kak, Capt Ajeet Singh, Sukhdev Singh Shoki and Ch Ghar Singh Sandhu as vice presidents and Surinder Choudhary & Rohit Choudhary as secretaries.
