Pulwama fruit market in South Kashmir is bereft of a reasonably adequate infrastructure resulting in many problems faced by the apple growers. There are several issues needing resolution like absence of auction sheds, grading and packaging sheds and shops in the market. Since trading “facilities” stay below at par levels, it affects the sales and proceeds thereof is what the traders complain.
The facilities to enable traders grade and package their produce with a capacity of ten thousands boxes at a time are needed to be provided as demanded by the apple traders. In the absence of this vital facility, the produce has to be stored in the open with chances of causing damages to the crop and resultant losses. The fears of traders are accentuated due to untimely, rather premature snowfall consecutively for the last two years which caused damages to all those apples which were heaped in the open. The roads leading to the fruit market are kuccha and not blacktopped. We trust, the authorities concerned shall look into the problems of this fruit market and sort them out to the satisfaction of the local traders.
