Srinagar, Sept 6: The flood situation in Kashmir due to incessant rains for more than 96 hours has spoiled the wedding season across Kashmir valley, because of which hundreds of marriage functions scheduled in the first two weeks of September month were mostly cancelled.
Although, some families preferred to organize the wedding ceremony in austerity by organizing closed door functions after inviting some close relatives. Majority of the families preferred to wait for some days till situation would return to normal.
Wedding invitations have been cancelled in last four days after rains wreck hovac.
“We went ahead with wedding ceremony despite all odds arisen due to floods,” said Showkat Hussain, a resident of Batamallo, adding, the ceremony was held in austere way after number of guests was reduced from 80 to four only.
Scores of families in Bemina, HMT, Batamallo, Mehjoor Nagar and Chanapora said that they were not in a position to host guests after flood water entered into their houses.
They said rain water not only spoiled their scheduled date for the weddings, but also damaged their goods and other material meant for the ceremony.
Ghulam Nabi Baba, President Anjuman e Behbude Aeshpazan told the Excelsior that hundreds of marriage functions have been cancelled in the last five days. “We have suffered huge losses as people had to cancel marriage functions at the last moment. We can’t blame them also as it has been nature’s fury,” he said, adding, they would return the token money which they had taken from their clients for preparing feast.
Since September and October is peak season for hosting marriages in Kashmir and especially in Srinagar the rains and flash floods have dashed the hopes of hundreds of families to host weddings with pomp and show.
