POONCH, June 22: Major Rohit Sharma, SC, martyrdom day was observed today at Government Higher Secondary School, Mandi with great zeal and enthusiasm.
Brigadier MK Mago, SM, Commandor, Poonch Brigade, was the chief guest on the occasion.
The function was attended by army officers, officials from civil administration and locals in large number.
The patriotic fervour of the event was taken to a new height by the scintillating cultural programme presented by the local school children.
Major Rohit Sharma, SC (posthumous), was martyred in a search and strike operation of army against terrorists in Poonch. In his memory, Shaheed Major Rohit Memorial NGO was established in June 1999 by Ali Mohd Mir.
To make the event memorable, Army distributed blankets to the needy and poor people and gifts to students on behalf of the Army.
Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the NGO lauded the role of Army to ensure peace in the area besides providing every possible help to the people of Mandi in shaping their future adding that it was not possible to conduct such an event without the active support of Army.
Brigadier MK Mago admitted that it is the cooperation between the locals and the army, which will ensure lasting peace and lead to development and prosperity in the region.
