VIJAYPUR, Aug 28: Apni Party Provincial president, Jammu and former Minister, S. Manjit Singh along with farmers here today paid rich tribute to two martyrs S. Puran Singh and Ramesh Lal who laid their lives during a movement in 1991 in support of farmers.
A handout stated that both these farmers became victims of violent response to peaceful demonstration in Vijaypur in 1991 that demanded water, electricity and other facilities for the farmers.
A procession led by Manjit Singh was also taken out in Vijaypur after which a large numbers of prominent citizens, PRIs, farmers and others offered floral tributes to S. Puran Singh and Ramesh Lal.
Recalling sacrifice of the martyrs, Manjit Singh expressed concern over the plight of farmers that has become worse than 1991’s situation.
“That time the farmers came on roads against the policies of the then Government. However, the situation has not changed for these farmers as their demands are still unchanged because their issues remained unresolved for decades,” he claimed.
The Apni Party leader also referred to Sarore Toll Plaza and said that illegal collection of Toll Tax continues there despite strong resentment among the people of Jammu and agitation continuing in Samba.
He also demanded that the smart meters should not be installed because they are generating excessive electricity bills.
