KOLKATA: Legendary music composer Rahul Dev Burman, fondly known as R.D Burman, would have celebrated his 79th birthday on Wednesday, had he been alive, and the film fraternity believes the maverick musician would have been a hit with audiences even today. To celebrate his birth anniversary, the city organised musical events, featuring singers, musicians who worked with the musical maestro.
He was also known by the name Pancham Da among his fans. His beautiful melodies are still loved and heard by the masses. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembered the legendary music director Rahul Dev Burman on the occasion. “Remembering the legendary music director Rahul Dev Burman on his birth anniversary @ashabhosle,” Ms Banerjee posted on her social networking page. The ”Nightingale” of Bollywood and Bharat Ratna recipient Lata Mangeshkar in a tweet said, “Namaskar. Aaj pratibhawaan aur prayogsheel sangeetkar R D Burman yaane Pancham ki jayanti hai. Main Pancham ke sangeet ko vinamra abhivadan karti hun.” Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted, ” We remember Rahul Dev Burman, Bollywood music director, on his birth anniversary. Fondly known as Pancham Da, he was a maverick and a genius who changed Hindi film music forever.” Nationalist Congress Party leader Praful Patel said, “Remembering the Music Maestro, King of melodies #RDBurman on his 79th Birth Anniversary. Your music will stay with us forever Pancham Da.” Bollywood singer Arijit Singh in a tweet said, “When the history of Bollywood music will be written, his name will undoubtedly feature among the best! Here’s wishing the legendary#RDBurman ji a very happy birthday. Happy birthday Pancham Da … India is so lucky to have a gem’s like you.” Playback singer Adnan Sami tweeted, ” Happy Birthday Pancham Da.. You inspired me as a kid.. When I watched the titles of a film, I didn’t care who or what it was as long as the title #RDBurman was there for music! You inspired me then.. You inspire me today. May you rest in peace, but in my heart you live on.” Bollywood director Madhur Bhandarkar said, “Remembering the musical Guru legend #RDBurman on his birth anniversary today! His music eternally lives in our hearts and playlist. Love you #Pancham Da.”
