*Heat wave to continue during next 5 days

JAMMU, May 21: With sudden rise in day temperature in past few days in Jammu, which is hovering between 41 degrees to 42 degree Celsius, the Weatherman has predicted that maximum temperature in the City of Temples may cross even 44 degrees by May end.
The Weatherman said that there is no major forecast of rain and the weather will generally remain dry till May end. “As the day temperature is recorded between 41 degrees to 42 degrees, it is expected to cross 44 degrees in coming days, probably by May 27-28,”he added.
He said Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 42.2 degree Celsius yesterday but today it went down by 1.2 degrees and was recorded at 41 degree Celsius. However, he said there will be no respite from the heat wave conditions in next few days as the maximum temperature may further rise.

Giving year-wise detailed IMD image, the Weatherman shared that the maximum temperature recorded on 26th May 1984 in Jammu was 47.4 degrees and it was an all-time record. As per the image, on 23 May 2023, the maximum temperature recorded was 42.0, on 15 May 2022 it was 43.9, on 27 May 2021 it was 41.6, on 28 May 2020 it was 42.6, on 31 May 2019 it was 44.1, on 30 May 2018 it was 43.5, on 27 May 2017 it was 41.7, on 20 May 2016 it was 43.2, on 26 May 2015 it was 40.5 and on 29 May 2014 it was 41.8 degrees Celsius.
He said that from May 22 to 28, generally dry weather with possibility of thundershower activity at isolated places can’t be ruled out while overall there will be no significant weather activity till May 28. He said that heat wave over plains of Jammu Division with hot and dry weather over hilly districts of Jammu Division and plains of Kashmir Division is likely to continue during next 5 days.
Sonam Lotus, the Director of the Meteorological Center in Leh said, “The maximum temperature recorded on Monday was 42.2 degrees and it was recorded 41.0 degrees today.” He said that the mercury will soar further in coming days with heat wave in isolated areas of Jammu region.
Meanwhile, to beat the heat, people were found to have a bath in Chenab River in Akhnoor and a heavy rush of people was witnessed there. Similarly, people of all ages were seen taking dip in Ranbir Canal at Canal Head and other areas of Jammu to cool their bodies while most of the people confined them at their homes in view of scorching heat in the day.
