JAMMU, Nov 15: Mayor Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Rajinder Kumar Sharma and Deputy Mayor, Baldev Singh Billawaria today unveiled the plaque of Maharja Ranjit Singh Chowk at Gadi Garh in presence of local Corporator Prof Yudhvir Singh and other prominent people.
The Chowk was recently rechristened as Sher-e-Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh by JMC and a resolution to this effect was unanimously passed by civic body.
A large number of locals and dignitaries of the area participated in the function. While highlighting the achievements of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Rajinder Kumar Sharma said that due to Maharaja Ranjit Singh the Jammu and Kashmir is the part of India. While terming Maharaja Ranjit Singh a great warrior and a powerful king and patriot by core, he said the late ruler of Punjab spanned the territories of Khalsa Raj to the boundaries of China and Afghanistan.
During his rule the people were enjoying all amenities and his treatment was equal to all communities. Rajinder Sharma said “We must follow principles of Maharaja”.
Dy Mayor, Baldev Singh Billawaria said that during the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh people of all religions got equal treatment.
Sudershan Singh Wazir Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Sikh United Front threw light on the life and achievements of Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the military reforms, education etc introduced by him.
Yudhvir Singh, Corporator said that how he submitted the resolution in the house and how all his counterparts supported the resolution.
Charanjit Singh retired SDM anchored the function in a well performed way. Amrik Singh a social activist presented vote of thanks.
