JAMMU, May 4: Taking the anti polythene campaign to oldest schools of city today, Mayor Jammu, Rajinder Sharma highlighted the importance of shifting from polythene carry bags to bio-degradable carry bags.
The anti-polythene campaign was held in two oldest schools of Jammu-Shri Ranbir Singh Multilateral (SRML) Higher Secondary School and Mubarak Mandi Government Girls Higher Secondary School. Sharma expressed confidence on the success of the campaign and said that within a month Jammu will be free from polythene and plastic made things.
He sought cooperation from the students and said that joining the campaign for a healthy environment will essentially leave them with rich experience that will help them in meeting future challenges of life.
“There is no alternate to hard work and strong self-confidence as both these qualities were present in former President of India, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam which help him to rise from a humble family to head DRDO and then to get elevated as supreme commander of all the three defence forces of the country,” the Mayor maintained adding: “Youth is full of energy which when given proper direction gets remarkable results.”
Sharma said that presently Jammu is worst hit by massive use of polythene carry bags and plastic which has caused lot of pollution and chocking drains which cause floods even after slight rainfall in the city.
He further said that stray cows swallow poly-bags from garbage dumps and fall sick.
He said that students should join the campaign intended at clamping a stringent ban on the use of polythene and plastic and aware masses on the same.
He said that DRDO has provided bags made of cellulose and starch as an alternate to poly-carry bags.
On this occasion a debate on ‘Why polythene is to be banned’ was also held in both the schools and winners were awarded with certificates.
Winners of debate at SRML Hr Sec School were Amir-ul-Anjum who got first place, Arun Kumar got second place while Meharan Irshad along with Rehan Javes shared third place jointly.
Principal of the School, Anjali Gupta, Vice Principal, Dr. Satya Bhushan Raina expressed gratitude to the Mayor for enlightening the students on the vital topic.
At Mubarak Mandi, Girls Hr Secondary School Vedika got first place, Shagun, second while Pooja and Anjali shared third place.
Principal of the School Poonam Sharma, Vice Principal Nirmala Thakur requested for organising such lectures and debates repeatedly.
Programme organiser, Poonam Rajput also spoke on the occasion.
