Srinagar, May 16: In blatant disregard for the hygiene and scenic beauty of the area, the authorities of Municipal Council (MC) Ganderbal are dumping garbage collected from various areas along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway near Beehama.
Locals report that this practice has turned the spot into a full-fledged dumping yard, attracting stray dogs and resulting in a foul smell.
“It is just on the road where they are dumping the garbage daily. We have tourists as well as locals passing through this area, and it really presents a bad picture apart from affecting the appearance,” said Ghulam Hassan Parra from Beehama.
He added that the dumping has also attracted dogs and other animals, making commuting difficult and nearly impossible for pedestrians to walk through the spot.
“I do not understand why they have done this; they need to relocate it somewhere else and ensure that the spot along the National Highway remains clean,” he added.
Another resident, Nisar Ahmad Khan, noted that during the Yatra, the road remains clean and not even a single polythene packet is seen anywhere.
“However, the situation we are facing now is quite different, with people subjected to a foul smell. It also presents a bad image of the place to visitors and others,” he said.
He pointed out the irony that officials of the district administration, who use the road daily on their way to Sonamarg and other places, have not taken note of the heaps of garbage along the National Highway.
“We demand that the garbage be shifted to another location so that people are spared from the foul smell,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mirza Asif Ali Beigh, Executive Officer of the Municipal Council Ganderbal, assured that the garbage will be removed soon.
“Recently there was a fire in Central Market Ganderbal and we had to dump all the debris because it was difficult to segregate it. The garbage will be removed from the highway soon,” he claimed.
