During the drive there was a scuffle between the employees of the MC and the people selling goods on the road-side walkways in the markets of the town. As soon as the squad of Municipal Council Rajouri, led by Executive Officer Municipal Council Rajouri, assisted by Naib Tehsildar Rajouri Sham Lal along with heavy police force reached Gujjar Mandi, Abdullah Pul, Khewra markets of Rajouri, the people selling goods along the road strongly resisted it. The team started seizing their goods from the footpaths.
Taking action against the hawkers, road side vendors and the people blocking pedestrian path, the team cleared all these spaces near Abdullah Bridge, Khewra, Gujjar Mandi etc.
The Executive Officer of the Municipal Council said that those who were illegally setting up vends/Khokhas etc in the said markets and causing problems for pedestrians or small vehicles were earlier given notices that they should not indulge in encroachments but they did not pay any attention to it.
The Deputy Commissioner Rajouri has given strict instructions that encroachment should be removed at the earliest and that is why even after giving notice, when these hawkers/vendors did not mend their ways, the Municipal Council was forced to take action. The officer said that this campaign will continue in the coming days and very soon the encroachment done by shopkeepers outside their shops in the main market of Rajouri will be removed.
The officer said that if a hawker sells goods by roaming here and there, then no action will be taken against him, but action will continue against those who create problems for the common people by setting up their vends at a particular place.
