JAMMU, Apr 11: Medical Council of India (MCI) has taken strong exception to shortage of faculty in Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu and reprimanded authorities of the institution for violating its guidelines by making various Assistant Professors and Incharge Associate Professors as heads of many units of the various departments of the institutions.
According to the official sources, a three-member team of Medical Council of India paid a surprise visit to GMCH Jammu early yesterday morning to check whether the institution has complied with its objections and shortcomings pointed out in previous inspection or not.
Sources said in the day-long inspection which started at about 7 am in the morning and winded up at about 11 in the night, the MCI team comprising members from Kolkata, Gujarat and Ahmedabad visited the seminar halls, recreation rooms, lecture halls, demonstration rooms, High Dependency Emergency Ward, e-class rooms and other facilities of the institution and almost expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure except in few cases such as deficiency of space in interns’ hostel and lack of one examination hall of seating capacity 250, as both the facilities are still under construction.
“However, the MCI team reprimanded the GMCH authorities for shortage of faculty in various key departments where Incharge Associate Professors and even Assistant Professors are heading various units whereas as per MCI guidelines only a Professor and a confirmed Associate Professor can head a unit”, sources said.
Sources revealed that the issue of shortage of faculty came to fore in one to one meetings of the MCI team with Head of the Departments. The team found that an Assistant Professor was heading one of the units in Cardiology department while many Incharge Associate Professors were heading units in Surgery, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Neurosurgery, CPA and Urology.
“Moreover, the team also pointed out shortage of paramedical staff and deficiency of infusion funds which were clarified by the GMCH Principal up to the satisfaction of the MCI team”, sources said.
However, despite repeated attempts, Principal, GMCH Jammu, Dr Sunanda Raina, could not be contacted for comments.
