Apropos ‘ A meaningless debate’ by Tavleen Singh (DE Dec 6th 2012), The views of the author about hybrid seeds are not clear. Indian Agriculture Universities and Seed Farms also prepare hybrid seeds without ‘locked genes’. Whereas International seed companies supply hybrid seeds with ‘locked genes’.
This seed can yield only one crop, thus making the farmer dependent on ‘Seed Companies’.
In the field of Agriculture FDI shall not help the farmer so far as the seed procurement is concerned, especially small farmer may perish (the way farmers perished in ‘Grapes of wrath’ by John Steinback). The achievements of green revolution in country may come to harm.
