Media not allowed to cover polls

JAMMU, Feb 18: The media persons especially the cameramen and photographers of news channels and newspapers were not allowed by the authorities today to cover proceedings of the filing of nomination papers by the candidates of various political parties for eight seats of Legislative Council.
The media persons were prevented from entering the Civil Secretariat to cover the proceedings inside the Assembly complex on the ground that they had no instructions to allow the journalists inside.
Surprisingly, the Information Department also remained a mute spectator to the calls made to them by the media persons that they were not being allowed to cover the filing of nomination papers.
The security staff of the Civil Secretariat didn’t honour the identity cards of the journalists, who took serious exception to the Government move to bar them from entering the Secretariat premises.
Similar situation had arisen on January 15 during expansion of Council of Ministry at Raj Bhawan when photographers of various newspapers were denied permission to cover the event.
Today, however, the journalists were allowed inside the Civil Secretariat only after a National Conference functionary spoke to the Security staff but by then some of the candidates had filed the nomination papers.
