Mega breeders’ conference held

LEH, Nov 13: The Sheep Husbandry Department, for the first time today organized a breeders conference in Leh under Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), ICIMOD and Pashmina Wool Development Scheme of Ministry of Textiles. It was organised at Sindhu Sanskriti Kendra Auditorium Leh. The day long breeder conference was attended by a large number of breeders coming from different parts of Leh district including Councilors of LAHDC, Sarpanchs and district level officers headed by Deputy Commissioner Leh, Simrandeep Singh.
Addressing the conference Executive Councilors for Agriculture Sonam Dorjey who was chief guest on the occasion said that until and unless breeders get handsome income from livestock occupation, they will not adopt this profession seriously and make sheep and goat rearing a beneficial trade. He advised Sheep Husbandry Department to focus on value addition of livestock products using new technologies assuring Council’s full support. Underling the timely initiatives of LAHDC, Leh during heavy snowfall in Changthang region last year, Mr Dorjey credited the functionaries of the department in controlling the mortality of livestock there.
Advocating the importance of sustainable development, Mr Dorjey said that without livestock we can’t lead the land based economy of Ladakh on new heights as agriculture and livestock are heavily interdependent. He also made an appeal to the general masses to use and value tradition dresses which will encourage the market of pashmina and wool products in Ladakh.
Speaking on the occasion Executive Councilor for Sheep & Animal Husbandry Gyurment Drojey made a mention about Rs 42 crore project under 12th Five Year Plan for promotion of sheep husbandry which stand sanctioned under Ministry of Textile, (GoI) for Ladakh, adding that this project is aimed to make harsh lifestyle of nomadic people easy in the challenging climatic conditions of Changthang providing various essential facilities like Rebo type tents, multipurpose Solarized Torch long Rubber Gum Boots, pashmina comb etc under the scheme.
Earlier, K.K Goyal, Executive Director, CWDB, Jodhpur, Country Director World Society for Protection of Animals G. Sharma, Dr. Ashish Suta ( WSPA), DSHO, Leh Dr. Mohd Sharif and progressive breeders also spoke on the occasion.
Later, the chief guest and guest of honour distributed certificates and cash prizes among the best and progressive breeders of Leh district. They also distributed Rebo type tents, multipurpose Solarized Torch, long Rubber Gum Boots, pashmina comb etc to the breeders.
