SRINAGAR, Apr 1: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Dr Tanvir Maqbool Dar, filed their nomination papers from Anantnag Parliamentary constituency today.
The PDP president came to the DC’s office for filing nomination without Current Bank Account that is mandatory for every contestant so that expenditure incurred on the fighting elections is monitored. It took her over two hours to submit the nomination papers to the Returning Officer, Saugat Biswas, as she had to open a Current Bank Account first. It took over an hour for her to open an account.
Mehbooba was accompanied by the senior party leaders and legislators including MLAs Abdul Rehman Veeri, Sofi Abdul Gaffar, Rafi Ahmad Mir, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain.
After filing her nomination papers, PDP president hit out at the State Government over former Health Minister Shabir Khan saying that Jammu and Kashmir is the only State in the country where different yard sticks are being applied. “When the editor in Chief of Tehelka was hounded in a molestation case, how come a Minister in Jammu and Kashmir facing similar charges is out?” she asked.
Mehbooba also accused NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah of being involved in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) scam, adding that people in the State are disheartened due to different yard sticks being adopted for rich and poor.
“People are feeling insecure and thanks to NC for that”, said Mehbooba. She said the statement made by former NC leader, Mohammad Yousuf Bhat about the mysterious death of National Conference leader Haji Yousuf is neither a revelation for her nor a surprise to the people. “Had the incident involving Haji Yousuf’s mysterious death at the residence of the Chief Minister taken place in any other State, the Chief Minister of that State would have quit his office on moral grounds within 24 hours. But the incident seems to have hardly bothered Chief Minister Omar Abdullah,” Mehbooba said.
The PDP president said: “If we are elected to Parliament by the people, we pledge to raise every issue related to Kashmir in Parliament.”
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Dr Tanvir Maqbool Dar, filed his nomination papers from Anantnag Parliamentary constituency today after Mehbooba filed her.
Son of former Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Mohammad Maqbool Dar, Tanvir is a young orthopaedic surgeon. Tanvir was working at Gangaram Hospital in Delhi, when AAP announced his candidature early this month.
Tanvir arrived to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Anantnag this afternoon along with a group of his supporters.
After filing his nomination, Tanvir said that his party’s agenda is to fight against corruption and dislodge the traditional politicians who when voted to power don’t listen to the common people.
The AAP candidate complained that his workers were humiliated by the police and he was frisked at the DC’s office. He said that he followed the code of conduct by parking the vehicles 200 metres away from the DC office while the other candidate violated the code of conduct.
