New Delhi, Apr 22: Expressing dismay over the Centre’s inordinate delay in approving much-needed flood relief and rehabilitation package for Jammu and Kashmir, PDP president and Member Parliament, Mehbooba Mufti today called on the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in the matter.
She informed the Prime Minister that given the magnitude of devastation caused by the September 2014 floods, a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation process can be kick-started by the State Government only if adequate financial resources are made available by the Centre for the purpose.
She sought Prime Minister’s intervention in ensuring speedy movement forward on the package, submitted by the State Government, to tide over the massive losses in housing, trade, agriculture, horticulture and allied sectors due to the devastating floods.
Mehbooba said the State Government’s flood relief and rehabilitation plan envisaged three-phased approach starting with restoration of livelihood followed by restoration of business and restoration of houses and assets. “The Central Government should take an early call on the flood relief and rehabilitation package to ensure that the people, who were affected by the September deluge start their normal business and day-to-day activities as soon as possible,” she said.
Centre is yet to take a call on a Cabinet proposal sent by J&K Government seeking a package for relief and rehabilitation of the people affected by the floods in September last year.
The PDP president also raised the issue of shortfall of food-grains in J&K and requested the Prime Minister for allocating rations to the State as per Census of 2011.
She urged the Prime Minister for allotting food-grains on the basis of ‘No-Profit No-Loss’, which is reflected in the Common Minimum Programme of the Coalition Government in the State. Presently, the ration is distributed in J&K on the basis of 2001 Census.
Ms Mehbooba also raised with Modi the problems being faced by the students from Jammu and Kashmir on account of Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS). She sought Prime Minister’s intervention in early redressel of the issues involving PMSSS.
The Prime Minister assured Ms Mufti that he would ask the concerned Ministries in the Government of India to look into the matter at the earliest.
Ms Mehbooba also discussed with the Prime Minister the functioning of the PDP-BJP coalition Government in the State and both the leaders expressed satisfaction over the performance of the alliance. She also discussed with the Prime Minister the overall political and developmental scenario in the State.
Earlier, Ms Mehbooba also called on Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley and flagged the issue of relief and rehabilitation of flood victims with him. She also discussed the issue of resource availability for some major developmental initiatives in the State.
