JAMMU, Aug 31: To mark the Women’s Equality Day, an online inter-college symposium was organized by Shrimati Shanti Gupta Centre for Women’s Studies (SSGCWS), MIER, in collaboration with Govt College for Women, Parade Ground, Jammu.
The theme of the symposium was ‘For Creating a Harmonious Society Gender Equality is the Most Important Factor than Any Other Isms’. Dr Vishva Rakasha, Professor, Department of Sociology and Director, Center for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu, was the chief guest while Dr S P Sarawat, Principal Govt College for Women, Parade Ground, Jammu was the distinguished guest.
Dr Jyoti Parihar, Associate Professor, Govt College of Education, Jammu and Dr Pramod Shrivastava, Principal Model Academy School, were the Jury members.
Six participants, three from Govt College for Women, Parade Ground, Jammu and three from MIER College of Education took part in this symposium. The students presented their views on the themes and also shared what needs to be changed for the harmonious development of the society focusing on gender equality.
On the basis of the results given by Jury members, Khushi from Govt College for Women, Parade Ground and Muskan Sharma, MIER College of Education bagged the first position. Palvasha Khanam from Govt College for Women, Parade Ground clinched the second position while Palakdeep Kour, MIER College of Education secured the third place. A consolation prize was given to Madhvi Rajput from MIER College of Education.
Dr Vishva Rakasha, in her address, talked about different causes of gender inequality and provided day-to-day examples. She said gender inequality is multidimensional and multilayered issue and requires sensitive but firm interventions such as attitudinal change, education, social mobility, economic security, safety, and ability to make decisions.
Speaking on the occasion, the Judges, Dr Jyoti Parihar and Dr Pramod Shrivastava, said such collaborative events help in sensitization about equality. They added that education can be a powerful tool to bring the change in mindset of people which is required for equality.
Dr Sonia Khajuria, Head Center for Women’s Studies, Govt College for Women, Parade Ground, Jammu; Dr Moolraj Sharma, HoD PG Department, MIER College of Education; Dr Rohnika Sharma, HoD UG Department, MIER College; Deputy HoDs PG and UG Department, Dr Nishta Rana and Dr Monika Bajaj; Dr Reeta Dwivedi, Convener SSGCWS, MIER College along with other faculty members and students of MIER College of Education graced the occasion.
