JAMMU, Apr 28: The NSS unit of Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), “Prayaas” today adopted village Amb in Block Bhalwal of Jammu district as a part of its social responsibility initiative.
Over 100 volunteer students from MIET in the presence of Prof Ankur Gupta, Director MIET, Maj Gen (Retd) Prof SK Sharma, Director Academics, participated in the event. In the process of adopting the village, the NSS team of the college under Assistant Professor, Sahib Singh, visited the village a number of times to ascertain the difficulties being faced by them. College students and the staff then joined hands to mobilize resources to meet the stated requirements.
During the inaugural event, two desk top computers, one laptop computer, volley ball poles with net and balls, cricket and badminton equipment were donated to the Middle School, Amb. MIET students shall visit the Amb Middle School every fortnight to conduct computer classes for the students.
To encourage the villagers to keep the village clean as per Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, five dust bins were also donated and placed at different locations. Volunteers conducted small awareness sessions for the school children and villagers on cleanliness and sanitation, importance of education, etc.
To link the villagers with the Pradhanmantri Bima Yojna, 15 deserving villagers were selected and insured in the first phase. Their annual premium has been contributed by the students for the life time by depositing a corpus amount in the bank, interest of which will cater for the annual premium for them for the life time.
Also, 600 clothing items were distributed among families which were identified as living Below Poverty Line (BPL). In the next phase, MIET shall undertake renovation of the school toilet, provisioning of water tank and exploring options to make the village “cashless” through adoption of digital payment options.
