JAMMU, Apr 30: In a significant development, the Center for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CRIE) at MIET reported that the 50th patent was filed at the Indian Patents and Trademarks Office (IPTO), representing a major milestone in homegrown innovation in the region.
Out of the 50 filed patents, 16 patents have been granted while a vast majority of the patents have been published and awaiting final examination by the IPTO. In addition, 7 copyrights and design registrations have also been filed to protect the IPR generated by the institution.
Prof Ankur Gupta, Director MIET lauded the faculty members and students for pushing the boundaries of innovation and trying to address critical technical challenges, resulting in the filing and grant of patents. He reiterated the commitment of MIET in supporting innovation and cultivating an inventive mindset, besides investing consistently in capacity building. He also reported the successful commercialization of two granted patents, resulting in faculty led startups being formed and successfully launching products incubated under the CRIE.
One of the startups, which provides a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform offering quality analytics for Higher Education institutions is at an advanced revenue stage with 25+ customers, while another computer vision-based startup is at pre-revenue stage undergoing product trials. Four additional startups are in the process of being formally registered who are working in the deep tech product space around immersive technologies and AI. All the patent applications at MIET are internally developed and filed through the CRIE, which tracks the patent applications and ensures compliance at all stages of the patent application through to the final grant. This has resulted in a 100 percent patent filing to grant ratio till date.
Dr Renu Gupta, Chairperson MIER Group of Institutions, appreciated exhorted all the faculty and students to evince genuine interest in innovation and help build true credibility and pride in local innovation, placing MIET and JK UT on the national innovation map.
Recently MIET had figured in the top performing institute in JK UT on Innovation under the Institute Innovation Council (IIC) program of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Govt of J&K and nominated as the Mentor Institution to guide five major institutions in the region around innovation.
