Militant associate arrested in Handwara

SRINAGAR, Nov 5: A militant was killed and two security force personnel were injured in a gunfight that broke out in Kaitson area of Bandipora district today while another gun battle has started in Lolab area of Kupwara district.

An official said that an exchange of fire took place between security forces and militants in Kaitson woods of Bandipora during which an unidentified militant was killed. He said that another militant is trapped and the operation is going on.

“Based on specific intelligence input regarding the presence of terrorists in the general area of Kaitsan forest, a joint operation was launched by Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF in the general area of Chuntawadi Kaitsan, Bandipora. Contact was established and firefight ensued,” Chinar Corps – Indian Army wrote on X.
The operation is in progress and two security force personnel were injured in the encounter.
Earlier on November 1, a brief exchange of fire took place between militants and security forces at Panar forest area. However, the militants managed to flee from the spot, which led to a massive combing operation in the woods by security forces.
In the meantime, another gun battle broke out in the Lolab forest area of Kupwara district this evening. More troops were rushed to the area and a large forest area has been cordoned off to prevent militants from fleeing the area.
Meanwhile, security forces today apprehended a militant associate during a cordon and search operation in Handwara.
A police spokesman said that Handwara Police, in collaboration with the 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the 92nd Battalion CRPF, apprehended a militant associate identified as Ashiq Hussain Wani, son of Abdul Kareem Wani, a resident of Tujjer Shareef, Sopore in Handwara.
Security forces recovered one pistol, a magazine and seven live rounds from Wani’s possession. “Following his apprehension, a case has been registered under FIR No. 200/2024 at Police Station Handwara, with further investigation now underway,”, he said.
