Militant killed, IED defused

Srinagar, June 24: One militant was killed in an encounter in Waderbala village of Handwara area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today while Police prevented a major tragedy as they detected an IED planted on Airport road.
The operation in Waderbala in Handwara area of North Kashmir was started three days ago after security forces received specific information about the presence of militants in the area.
A joint operation was launched by police and Army against the hiding militants. The militants were trapped last evening and they fired on troops leading to a fierce gun battle in which one militant was killed today.
And in Srinagar, Police today prevented a tragedy by detecting and defusing an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted in Hyderpora area.
Police said that an IED weighing 5kgs, planted in a rice cooker, was detected by police near a flyover at Hyderpora in Srinagar in the wee hours of this morning.
“The IED planted on roadside in the area was defused by a bomb squad,” he said.
