Srinagar, Sept 22: The operation against the recently infiltrated militants in Uri forests has entered eighth day today and Army claimed that the militant who was killed last evening is a top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Baramulla based 19-Division of Army, Bipin Rawat, said today that the Army suspected that the militant who was killed last evening is a commander.
“Mostly the commanders carry the matrix sheets, maps and Global Positioning System (GPS) and money. We feel that he was a commander. We have sent the GPS device that was recovered from his possession for getting technical details”, said the GOC. He said that Army is deciphering the intercepts they have received to confirm the identity of the killed militant and his rank.
The GOC said that large number of militants are waiting across the Line of Control (LoC) to infiltrate into Kashmir valley through Uri sector. He said that Army is on high alert and won’t allow their designs to succeed. “Any militant who has even succeeded in cross over won’t be allowed to enter into Kashmir valley”, he added.
The GOC said that for the past 8 days the operation against the militants is going on in Lacchipora forests since it was launched last Saturday evening. The freak weather during last week hampered the operation but Army continued to lay ambushes in the Lacchipora forests to restrict them within the forests.
Army said that they noticed the movement of a militant last evening and fired at him. They said that he was climbing a mountain when Army saw him.
The Army has recovered one AK-47 rifle, 5 Magazine 5, AK ammunition, one GPS, two Matrix sheets, one map, two hand grenades one knife and Rs 59,000 Indian currency from his possession.
Army said that the operation that was being carried out by 18-Dogra will continue against these infiltrated militants. Army has laid ambushes at several places in these forests to eliminate the group.
Army launched operation in Lacchipora forests of Uri on September 15, after they received information about the presence of militants at Baila near Mohra on the Eastern side of river Jehleum.
Earlier they had received information about the presence of two militants who they thought had come to these forests to receive a militant group. Now Army suspected that there were 7 recently infiltrated militants of LeT, including few commanders, who had managed to sneak in through LoC in Kamalkote sector of Uri.
It may be mentioned here that on September 3 Army had noticed movement of around 3 infiltrators near the fence in Kamalkote sector of Uri in North Kashmir but they were fired upon and after that they didn’t notice any forward movement. The night surveillance devices of the Army had not picked up any forward movement of the infiltrators. But Army had found marks on the ground of some one crossing the fence. The Army launched a massive operation in Kamalkote against the infiltrated militants but could not track them.
It is believed that the group had managed to cross the LoC on September 3 and reached Lacchipora forests where they have been trapped by Army. One of the militants was killed on September 15, the same evening when the operation was launched. The Army had recovered four Magazines, 4 UBGL grenades, one pistol, one hand grenade, one pistol ammunition with magazine, one wireless set, one GPS set, one Thuraya Satellite phone, one knife and some medicine from the militant who was killed on the first day of the operation.
