Militants attack police party; 4 cops, 2 civilians injured

SRINAGAR, June 7:  Militants today fired upon a police party in South Kashmir district of Anantnag injuring six persons including four police men while three police men were suspended in Budgam after they were found absent from duty when militants attacked their post last evening.
Superintendent of Police, Shopian, Showkat Ahmad told Excelsior that a police party was fired upon by the militants near Bungam area in South Kashmir’s Shopian district today in which six persons including 4 police men were injured.
The SP said that the militant had come in an ION car and fired on the police party from inside their vehicle and ran away. He said that the car was hit by a truck when the militants fled after carrying out the attack. “We launched searches for the car and the militants but could not trace them”, he added.
The police officer said that the militants were from Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and had come from outside the district.
The SP said that the special police team from District Police Lines was on a routine check to a minority guard picket in Bungam village of Shopian when militants fired at them.
“Three policemen Shabir Ahmad, Vikas Pandith and Zahoor Ahmad received bullet injuries in legs and another cop Mehraj-ud-Din received bullet in abdomen. They have been shifted to Srinagar hospital”, said a police officer. Two civilians Mohammad Amin and Bashir Ahmad Hajam both residents of Bungam were injured in this incident have been shifted to Bone and Joint hospital Srinagar.
In the meantime, police today detained seven persons in connection with an attack on a policeman guarding Pakherpora shrine in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district. The Special Operation Group (SOG) Pakherpora picked up seven suspected persons for questioning.
Three policemen, Shakeel Ahmad, Mohammad Shafi who were on unauthorized leave and Mohammad Altaf who had gone to market were suspended after initial inquiry.
It may be mentioned here that unknown militants last evening barged inside guard room at Pakherpora Shrine and attacked Constable Shabir Ahmad with an iron rod on his head. Later they opened trunk and decamped with 3 SLR, 3 magazines and 60 rounds.
