Militants desperate to carry out strikes: Army

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, Dec 16: The two top Army commanders from 15th and 16th Corps based at Srinagar and Jammu, have said that militants are desperate to infiltrate into  this side of the border to carry out strikes and disturb elections.
Speaking on the sidelines of a function held on the occasion of Vijay Divas at Chinar Corps headquarters Srinagar today, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 15 Corps Lt Gen Subrata Saha, said that militants are desperate to infiltrate into Kashmir valley to carry out attacks. However, he said that troops are fully prepared to thwart such attempts.
Lt Gen Saha told the reporters that militants are desperate to carry out more attacks in Kashmir. “A large number of militants are waiting on the other side of the border to infiltrate but the troops are fully equipped and prepared to bring them down”, he added.
The GOC said that army is prepared to neutralize the militant groups which are hell bent to disrupt the peace in Kashmir valley. He said that army stands always for the well being of the people of the State and wants peace and prosperity.
Commenting on the Mohura, Uri and other attacks, the GOC said that the timely action by the security forces foiled the militants’ attempts to disrupt peace. He said that for the peaceful conduction of polls in Kashmir, a comprehensive plan was devised and the results were positive on the ground. He said that adequate security arrangements were put in place to ensure smooth conduct of polls.
Speaking on the occasion, Lt General Saha, recounted the sacrifices made and the tremendous achievements of the Chinar Corps during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. He said that a victory of such a magnitude would not have been possible without tremendous sacrifice by the soldiers and immense popular support.
General Officer Commanding (GOC), White Knight (16th) Corps Lt Gen K H Singh has said that militants are desperate to cross over to this side in groups to carry out attacks and disturb peace and the ongoing election process in the region.
“Fidayeen attacks are the changed trend of militants to attack on the border with an aim to sneak into our  territory,” Lt Gen Singh told reporters at the sidelines of  ‘Vijay Diwas’ celebrations at White Knight Corps, Nagrota in city outskirts here today.
The General said, “The Army is fully equipped and geared up to tackle any kind of situation along the borders,” adding, that all kind of attempts are being made by them (militants) to sabotage the ongoing election process but our alert troops have foiled their nefarious designs.
“After remaining unsuccessful in crossing over to this side, they are “desperate” to sneak and attacking in big groups in form of Fiadyeens but we are alert and prepared,” said the GOC.
Claiming that the cross-border activities have increased, the General said, “Around 250 militants are active at the launching pads and are waiting to cross over to this side”.
He, however, said in the last 45 days, attempts of infiltration were made in South of  Pir Panjal but the Army successfully foiled them.
Earlier, Lt Gen Singh, laid the wreath at the Ashwamedh Shaurya Sthal in the Nagrota Garrison to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of ‘Vijay Diwas’.  He paid homage to the martyrs, who left a glorious trail of victory with their exemplary display of unwavering devotion to duty towards motherland.
