Militants ransack houses of cops

SRINAGAR, July 28: Militants last night carried out raids on the residential houses of officers and men of Jammu and Kashmir Police and workers of ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in South Kashmir while they also set ablaze house of a counter-insurgent while Army defused an IED in Baramulla district.
Militants barged into the residential houses of Superintendent of Police (SP), an Inspector and other 5 policemen in Nowbal Khudwani, Qoimoh, Desan, Marhsma and Sempora Behibagh of Kulgam district last night. They ransacked the houses of cops and threatened them of dire consequences if they didn’t quit from police. They also set ablaze house of a counter-insurgent in Kulgam.
In Pulwama district, militants conducted similar raids at Naira, Tumlahal, Trichal and in Tral during which they beat up policemen, ransacked their properties and asked them to quit from their jobs.
Militants also raided houses of Kashmiri CRPF personnel in Pulwama and beat them apart from ransacking properties. Some of the forces men whose houses were attacked and were beaten by militants have been identified as CRPF 183Bn Constable Naseer Ali Rather of Naira, SPO Bilal Farooq Gaasi of Trichal Pulwama and SPO Farooq Magray of Tumlehal.
The house of a PDP Panch, Ghulam Mohiuddin, at Trichal was also raided and ransacked by militants. Militants attempted to set ablaze house of police Head Constable at Arigam in Tral. However, they couldn’t set it ablaze and left from the spot. In Kareemabad Pulwama, posters asking two local cops to resign from police surfaced and they were threatened of dire consequences if they fail to abide by the direction.
The ransacking of the houses of cops comes a day after alleged thrashing of family members of a Hizbul Mujahideen militant by Police. However, police denied any thrashing of the family of militant.
In the meantime, Army today defused an IED on National Highway near Pattan are of Baramulla district.
Army said that their Rashtriya Rifles Khanpath Camp in Parihaspora Pattan in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district destroyed an IED.
They said that an IED was detected on highway by 29 Rastriya Rifles near Parihaspora Pattan, which was destroyed.
And for the sixth consecutive week, authorities disallowed Friday congregational prayers at historic Jama Masjid by imposing restrictions in parts of downtown city here.
Although there was no announcement of restrictions, authorities since morning imposed curbs in Nowhatta, Rajouri Kadal, Gojwara, Bohri Kadal, Nawa Kadal, Saraf Kadal and Naid Kadal. Hundreds of security forces personnel were deployed in these areas and to enforce the curbs they laid barbed wires and erected mobile bunkers at key junctions.
All the roads, lanes and by-lanes leading to Jama Masjid in Nowhatta area were sealed off by security forces while mosque’s gates were locked. Residents of the area said that they were not allowed to proceed towards the Jama Masjid for offering Friday prayers. The authorities said that they apprehended protests and that is why it was closed again for prayers.
There were no restrictions in other parts of the downtown and life went on smoothly. In the evening, few incidents of stone-pelting were reported from the areas which were placed under curbs. However, no one was injured and the normalcy returned shortly. The situation in rest of the Valley remained normal except protests and clashes in Beerwah and Sopore towns.
