Militants slit cop in Handwara

Srinagar, July 13: Militants today killed a policeman in Handwara forests of North Kashmir by slitting his throat where he had gone to collect the fire wood.
Police said that this morning, Head Constable Sonnaullah Zargar son of Abdul Gani resident of Hardoona, Vilgam had gone to a nearby forest area of Hangalpora alongwith his wife for collection of firewood.
Police said that the duo was intercepted by some unknown militants in the forest.
Sonnaullah was killed by the militants with a knife by slitting his throat. Police on hearing about the killing of the cop reached the spot and the area was cordoned off.
The body of the deceased Head Constable was handed over to his relatives for last rites. Handwara police have started the investigation in this regard. The deceased policeman is survived by his wife and four children including a girl.
Security forces have launched a massive operation to nab the militants responsible for the killing of the cop.
Handwara forests have sizable presence of militants and security forces have been conducting operations against them since April this year.
Meanwhile, police fired teargas shells and used batons to rescue three of their colleagues who were caught by an angry mob after mistaking them for thieves in Ganderbal today.
Three undercover cops including a Special Police Officer (SPO) were caught by an agitating locals, who mistook them as thieves at a village in Gund.
SHO Gund, Rayees Hussain said that the cops were deputed for investigating spurt in cases of burglary in Gund but despite revealing their identity, the angry mob did not pay heed to repeated requests to release them.
He said that locals had complained of frequent burglaries in the area and in order to lay a trap these police men were deputed in the village.
They thrashed the undercover cops, accusing them of being behind the burglaries in the village and staged a demonstration on the highway demanding stern action against them.
Police resorted to teargas shelling and used batons to disperse the protesters and rescued the cops.  All the three policemen were rescued and shifted to a local hospital.
Senior officers of civil administration rushed to the village to pacify the agitating villagers, the officials said adding the meeting between the locals and officials was going on.
