Srinagar, July 20: Mir Behri Dal residents today expressed their dissatisfaction with the prevailing lack of basic facilities, including drinking water, roads, and electricity, despite assurances from the administration, especially during the significant month of Muharram.
According to the locals, a few days ago, the Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar visited various Shia areas to assess the preparations for Muharram, with a focus on essential amenities like water, ration, electricity, and road infrastructure.
However, the visit, the locals said, failed to yield tangible results, leaving them neglected and compelled to fend for themselves.
“We had hoped for better, but our demands for essential services have been completely ignored, leaving us with no option but to endure these hardships,” lamented Abid Hussain Sofi, one of the affected residents.
The scarcity of water has also emerged as a pressing issue, severely impacting the observance of religious practices during Muharram.
As per the residents, the congregational eulogies, mourning gatherings, and processions are facing significant challenges due to the water shortage.
Adding to their woes, frequent disruptions in electricity supply and the absence of street lights have exacerbated the difficulties faced by the residents.
As the sacred month of Muharram is already underway, the locals said, the situation is anticipated to worsen for mourners, making it even more challenging to participate in religious observances.
The aggrieved residents are now appealing to the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, to intervene and take immediate action to address their most basic and urgent demands.
