Mirwaiz among several Hurriyat leaders placed under house arrest

SRINAGAR, May 18: Authorities here today placed chairman moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq along with some other leaders of the conglomerate under house arrest. The house arrest of Mirwaiz triggered protests in some areas of downtown Srinagar in which one person was injured.
This morning a posse of police personnel appeared outside the residence of Mirwaiz at Nigeen and asked him to stay inside saying that he has been placed under house arrest. Following this Mirwaiz was forced to stay indoors and he could neither offer the Friday prayers nor deliver his sermon at Jamia Masjid, Srinagar.
Other senior Hurriyat leaders who were placed under house arrest are Shabir Ahmad Shah, Professor Abdul Gani Bhat and Bilal Lone.
As the word about the house arrest of Mirwaiz reached people a huge group among them took out a procession from Jamia Masjid to AAC headquarters at Rajouri Kadal. The people protested against the Government action.
Stone pelting incidents were reported from Rajouri Kadal, Saraf Kadal and Kawdara areas of downtown Srinagar. One person was injured when a stone reportedly hit him during the stone pelting incident.
A police spokesman said that after the culmination of Friday prayers some miscreants threw stones on forces at Kawdara and Saraf Kadal in Srinagar.
One person namely Mohammad Ramzan Gujree son of Abdul Rehman resident of Chak Kawoosa got injured at Kawdara when a stone hurled by a miscreant hit his right eye. He was shifted to SMHS Hospital. Police exercised maximum restraint and the situation was brought to normal immediately,” the police spokesman said.
