SRINAGAR, Dec 28: Chairman moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today said the improved relationship between India and Pakistan would augur well for the peace process in the region.
Mirwaiz said that distance and differences between the two neighbouring countries can be narrowed by permitting people to move to both the sides freely and have people to people dialogue. He advocated for softening of borders on either sides of Line of Control adding that this would ensure that there is hassle free movement of people.
Addressing the Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid here after his return from Pakistan, Mirwaiz pitched for inclusion of Kashmiris in the talks aimed at solving Kashmir issue. He said bilateral talks can be result oriented only when Kashmiris are involved in such process.
Terming his faction’s visit to Pakistan as successful, Mirwaiz expressed happiness over the resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan. He said the Kashmiris are not against improved relations between Pakistan and India adding that this should not happen at the cost of the Kashmiri people.
“Our visit to Pakistan was beneficial for the peaceful process aimed at solving Kashmir issue. During our visit we met politicians including opposition, intellectuals and other civil society members. We urged them to persist with the policy of keeping Kashmir on their agenda and work towards a solution for this issue,” he said.
Mirwaiz said that the solution to Kashmir problem can emerge only from talks not and by means of any nuclear war. “War leads to destruction and when there is no war peace process will definitely work. Kashmir is not a territorial dispute between the two countries but a humanitarian issue and it has been recognized at international level.”
He said the stability in Afghanistan is linked to the peace in this region. He added that Afghanistan’s stability is directly linked to good relations between India and Pakistan.
