Srinagar, Mar 4: After almost 20 months, chairman of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq is likely to deliver a sermon at historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar after his release from house detention.
An official said that Mirwaiz is no longer in house detention and is free to go anywhere he wishes. But Mirwaiz aide told Excelsior that deployment of police is still there. “If he is allowed to go out, he will deliver a sermon at Jamia Masjid tomorrow”, he said.
Mirwaiz was placed under house detention on Aug 4, 2019 a day before the Government of India announced scrapping of Article 370.
His release assumes significance in the backdrop of India and Pakistan recently agreeing to honour the ceasefire along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.
If allowed, Mirwaiz will address Friday congregational gathering at historic Jamia Masjid tomorrow after 82 weeks.
Mirwaiz is scheduled to attend the Ulema Council Meet at Mirwaiz Manzil Rajouri Kadal, Srinagar to discuss the growing drug abuse issue in Kashmir besides other social issues.
