JAMMU, July 13: Nearly a month after a youth from the Jourian area of Akhnoor went missing, authorities in Pakistan have confirmed his death, leaving his family devastated.
Harash Nagotra, son of Subash Sharma, disappeared near the Chenab River in Bakor area on June 11, 2024. His family lodged a missing complaint with Police Post Jourian the following day, and the case was later transferred to Police Station Khour for investigation.

A police official told the Excelsior that the investigation suggests Nagotra might have committed suicide by jumping into the river, driven by frustration and stress as he had made a transaction of Rs 80,000-88,000 to a gaming application the day before his disappearance.
“His bike was also found near the river in Bakor,” said the police officer.
Approximately a month later, a Pakistani official from the post-mortem department confirmed Nagotra’s death via a WhatsApp message to his old number, now used by his father. The family had blocked Nagotra’s old SIM card and reissued the number in their name.
“The Pakistani official sent a WhatsApp message on the deceased’s number, currently used by his father,” the police officer said.
When asked how the official could have obtained the number, he explained, “Since the deceased was an Airtel employee, the Pakistani official got his contact number from the company’s ID card recovered from his body.”
“The official also sent the ID card to Nagotra’s father to confirm his death,” he added.
The grieving family has now requested authorities to repatriate Nagotra’s body.
