Missing youth’s body found from canal, family protest

JAMMU, Aug 19: The dead body of a missing youth was recovered today from a canal in Akhnoor area after which his family staged protest at Akhnoor demanding proper investigation into his missing and death.
According to the reports, about 22-year-old Rohit Kumar son of Pritam Das, resident of Patyari (Gurha Brahmana, Akhnoor), had gone missing on August 14 and his body was recovered this morning from a canal at village Kot Garhi of Akhnoor.
The deceased was a tractor driver by profession and before missing he had gone to Gharota along with one of his friends on his bike. His bike and neck scarf (parna) was recovered few days back from canal head, Akhnoor after which the police suspected that he might have drowned and launched search operation in the canal after getting stop release of water in the canal.
As the body was recovered this morning, the family members and relatives of the deceased along with his body staged brief protest, first at Bale-da-Bagh and then at Fawara Chowk (Akhnoor) demanding a fair probe into the matter as they suspected of some foul play in his death.
However, after getting assurance of a fair probe into the matter by the senior officers of the police, the protest was suspended by the family members and kin of the deceased.
Later, the body of the deceased was shifted to SDH Akhnoor and after postmortem, it was handed over to its legal heirs for last rites. Meanwhile, Akhnoor police had initiated inquest proceeding under Section 174 CrPC in the case to ascertain reason of the death.
