SRINAGAR, Sept 4: The hardline Hurriyat Conference sponsored strike called against any plans to construct a road to Amarnath Shrine in Himaliyan Mountains in South Kashmir disrupted life in parts of Kashmir valley today.
Shops, schools, banks and other business establishments in many parts of Kashmir remained closed due to the strike called by Hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
However, the impact of the strike was minimal in the outskirts of Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir valley as the strike call failed to evoke much response in these areas.
There was no major impact of the strike on transport services plying in and out of Srinagar city to other district of the Valley.
Geelani had called for a one-day strike to protest against any plans of the Government to construct a road to Amarnath shrine.
Geelani had demanded disbanding Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), which manages annual yatra, and handing over the management to local Kashmiri Pandits.
He had said unchecked and uncontrolled number of pilgrims to the cave shrine was causing tremendous harm to the ecology of the Valley.
The Government has already said that they have no plans to construct road to Amarnath but may improve the tracks in view of the Supreme Court orders.
