Mixed response to strike

Srinagar, Oct 27: The strike called by Hurriyat Conference (G) to protest the landing of Army in Kashmir on October 27, 1947 evoked mixed response today. Barring few incidents of stone pelting in old City Srinagar and Baramulla, the day passed off peacefully in Srinagar and other major towns of Kashmir Valley. Police and para-military CRPF were deployed in sensitive area of the city and other major towns to thwart any attempts of disturbing peace. Majority of the shops and business establishment, private offices and petrol pumps remained closed in the city and major towns of the Valley in response of the strike call. However, in parts of Srinagar there was mixed response to the strike as majority of the shops in Jawahar Nagar, Raj Bagh, Solina, Ram Bagh, Natipora, Sonawar, Dalgate and Maharaja Bazar remained open. The Sunday market on Residency road was also open and vendors did their routine business. In the old Srinagar, there was complete shutdown with shops closed and traffic mostly off the roads. Scores of youth resorted to stone pelting on police and CRPF personnel near Sheraz Cinema in Srinagar. However, police and CRPF chased them away. Normal life was disrupted in Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian districts of south Kashmir. However, private transport was seen plying on the roads. In North Kashmir life was paralyzed following in Baramulla, Kupwara, Handwara and Bandipora areas. Clashes were reported from General Bus Stand Baramulla between stone throwing protesters and police and CRPF.
