UDHAMPUR, Sept 7: The 3-day historic Sankri Devta Mela began today at village Meer, block Pancheri of district Udhampur.
Member Legislative Assembly, Chenani, Dina Nath Bhagat formally inaugurated the mela, wherein a large number of people from Bhamag, Panchari, Udhampur, Chenani and Ramnagar of Udhampur district besides adjoining districts of Jammu province converge for paying obeisance to Sankri Devta.
Speaking on the occasion, the MLA said that such festivals not only fulfill our religious aspirations and spiritual bliss but people hailing from different areas also get a chance to interact together and share their experiences and joy. He appealed to the participating devotees to take part in the mela which is playing a pivotal role in promotion of local culture, brotherhood and communal harmony in the society.
Emphasizing on preserving rich culture and traditional values of the area, Bhagat stressed on the need for the promotion of the mela and said that these melas are an indispensable part of our culture. “Various folk songs which are very much popular in the hilly areas and depict our rich culture should also be passed on to the younger generations so that the youth can understand the core values of their culture and keep it alive,” he stressed.
After inaugurating the mela, the MLA had a round of stalls installed by various departments like, Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture, Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Fisheries, Health, Tourism, RDD, for general awareness of different schemes. He called upon the officers to make their sincere and dedicated efforts to make the general public aware about the different Central and State Government sponsored schemes made especially for the upliftment of rural people.
District Administration Udhampur, under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner, Ravinder Kumar, has made elaborate arrangements of drinking water facility, medicare, electricity, sanitation, transport etc. Department of Youth Services and Sports, Udhampur organized a sports event in which students of different educational institutions participated besides presenting cultural programme.
Mela Officer, Tehsildar Panchari Narinder Sharma, , District Health Officer, Janak Raj, BMO, Panchari Anil Saloch Naib Tehsildar Jyoti Parkash ZEPO, Pawan Kumar Sharma district and tehsil level officers of different departments besides members of Sankri Devta Mela Committee and prominent citizen were present on the occasion.
