JAMMU, Apr 8: Former Minister and Independent MLA from Udhampur Pawan Gupta has described as ‘sham’ the magisterial inquiry ordered into the NIT episode by Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh and called for probe into entire episode including calling of police inside the campus by a sitting Judge of the State High Court.
He said pending inquiry by the sitting Judge, the police officers, who ordered lathicharge on innocent students, should taken off duty and placed under suspension.
In a statement, Gupta said Nirmal Singh was taken for a ride by the police officers that only mild lathicharge was ordered on the students while as the videos showed brutal lathicharge. He said Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani and Dr Nirmal Singh should have visited the campus to see the situation for themselves instead of depending upon the report of police officers.
The MLA said inquiry should cover as to who called police inside the NIT Campus. When Delhi Police with arrest warrants had to wait for days together outside the JNU gate to visit inside, how can JKP enter the NIT without the Director’s orders? he asked.
He demanded that FIR registered against the students should be quashed and their exams postponed.
Gupta pointed out that had the BJP been in opposition it would have called Jammu bandh and held massive protests but now for the lust of power, it was sacrificing interests of the students.
