Why should all types of aircraft not land at and take off from the Jammu Airport looking to huge potential of demand for commercial aviation and , therefore, have the only airport equipped with all facilities, has been largely addressed by extending of the portion of the runway. From a mere length of 6700 feet , the runway stands now stretched to 8000 feet although one stating ”extreme ” , that of 8000 feet stands now achieved , the other extreme for a ”typical” commercial airline runway length being 13000 feet. Anyway, this innovation and other ancillary works like erecting boundary wall and Perimeter Road were going to add lustre to the airport .
It is quite encouraging that the new extended runway was duly operationalized by a flight of an airliner traversing through it under a water cannon salute by the IAF , thus the extended portion formally being allowed to be used . That the project cleared way back in 2019 also comprised construction of a Turn Pad which has been designed to cater to the requirements of Airbus 321 meaning more of such flights for and from the Airport which belongs to the Indian Air Force and a civil enclave for movement of passengers is maintained by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) . Also the said project was completed by the AAI in coordination with the IAF and the MES. However, looking to the peculiar importance and huge potential for travelling passengers mostly tourists, the Airport must be made a model airport in terms of facilities and captivating ambiance.
