Srinagar, Dec 8: Entru-sted with the responsibility of maintenance and up-keeping of 2.9 kilometers long Jawahar Tunnel on strategic Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, a massive modernization work is underway to make it safer for road users, Beacon said today.
Chief Engineer Beacon, Brigadier AK Dass, said the Project Beacon has taken up many steps with the installation of advance technology required in the modernization of the over 60 year-old Tunnel.
Giving details, he said that the Tunnel is a life line of Jammu and Kashmir and the maintenance strategy is being followed to ensure the movement of traffic is not impeded even during the winters. Chief Engineer said that the security, safety, surveillance and mobility gadgets of the Jawahar Tunnel are being installed to give it a new look.
He informed that 322 energy efficient and long life LED lights have been fitted in both the tubes of the tunnel, including inter-connecting tubes and common areas like approaches and exists, control room etc. Around 35 Close Circuit Television Cameras have been put in place inside both the tubes, diversion tubes and interconnecting tube with centralized viewing in the control room, the Chief Engineer said.
Brigadier Dass added that a 750 KVA transformer has been fitted in the tunnel to ensure round the clock un-interrupted power supply. “In addition to this, two 2 KVA UPS system have been put in place inside the control room on both the sides which would ensure better change-over in the switch gear room and uninterrupted power supply in the control rooms,” he said.
The Chief Engineer pointed out that five defective jet fans and two defective axial flow fans on the exit of both the tubes have been set right which according to him would clean the tunnels from smoke and dust coming out of the vehicles.
While spelling out the achievements of the Beacon, he said that the organization is maintaining and looking after over 1500 kilometers of road network of Jam-mu and Kashmir thereby connecting rural populace with the urban ones and ushering an era of development in the State
