Modi presides over first meeting of NITI Ayog

NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi is today presiding over the first meeting of the newly constituted National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, ahead of the Union Budget, to be presented on February 28. The Ayog was set up on January 1 this year replacing the 65-year-old Planning Commission.
Mr Modi, who chairs the Ayog, is expected to seek support of all states in his efforts for fast-tracking creation of infrastructure and other social sector initiatives. The formation of NITI Aayog was announced on August 15 last year by Mr Modi during his Independence day address from the Red Fort.
Besides Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, vice-chairman Arvind Panagaraia, Ayog’s full time members and chief economic adviser Arvind Subramaniam, and other experts are attending the meeting. At today’s meeting, the Ayog members would get the first hand input from the Prime Minister regarding his expectations from the newly constituted body.
