The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jammu and Kashmir marks a significant milestone in the region’s journey towards development and integration with the rest of India. Since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the region has witnessed a remarkable transformation, with newfound opportunities emerging for its people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to fostering holistic development and unlocking the region’s full potential is visible on the ground. The abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to J&K, marked a significant political transformation for the region. For decades, this provision had been a source of contention and separatist sentiments, hindering efforts towards socio-economic progress. The historic decision to revoke Article 370 was a move aimed at fostering greater integration and unleashing the region’s untapped potential. It was a step towards ensuring equal rights and opportunities for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, bringing them on par with the rest of the country.
One of the key pillars of Jammu and Kashmir’s development agenda is economic empowerment. The region is blessed with abundant natural resources and a diverse landscape, offering immense potential for sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and handicrafts. However, years of conflict and political instability have impeded the growth of these sectors. With the abrogation of Article 370, the Government has signalled its commitment to unlocking the economic potential of Jammu and Kashmir. By investing in infrastructure, promoting entrepreneurship, and facilitating the ease of doing business, the Government aims to create a conducive environment for economic growth and job creation. Jammu and Kashmir’s picturesque landscapes, vibrant culture, and rich history make it a paradise for tourists. However, years of unrest have taken a toll on the tourism industry, deterring visitors and depriving the region of much-needed revenue. The Government’s focus on promoting tourism in Jammu and Kashmir is a welcome step towards reviving the industry and tapping into its immense potential.
Empowering the youth and women of Jammu and Kashmir is crucial for the region’s long-term development. Historically, youth in the region have been vulnerable to radicalization and unemployment, perpetuating a cycle of violence and instability. Similarly, women in Jammu and Kashmir have faced social and economic barriers. The Government’s focus on skill development, education, and entrepreneurship aims to empower the youth and women of Jammu and Kashmir, enabling them to become active participants in the region’s development process. The Prime Minister’s interaction with beneficiaries of various central schemes, including women achievers, farmers, and entrepreneurs, highlights the Government’s inclusive approach towards development. By empowering marginalised communities and fostering entrepreneurship, the Government is laying the groundwork for a more equitable and prosperous society.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the administration has implemented a multifaceted strategy with a strong focus on healthcare, education, infrastructure, transportation, agriculture, and industrialization in Jammu and Kashmir. Over the past few years, significant developments such as the establishment of two AIIMS, multiple GMCs, and the State Cancer Institute, along with the enhancement of district hospitals, have reshaped the healthcare landscape of the region. There has been a particular emphasis on rural development, evident through the construction of thousands of kilometres of new roads, bridges, tunnels, and flyovers. Efforts are underway around the clock to improve transportation infrastructure, including the ambitious goal of linking Kashmir with the rest of the country via a rail link. This initiative aims to boost the transportation of horticultural produce, facilitate the establishment of industries in Kashmir, and promote tourism by reducing travel time. Additionally, the Government has focused on industrial development, leading to the establishment of new industrial estates and record investments in the sector. Special attention has been given to promoting women’s entrepreneurship with dedicated schemes and support for rural self-help groups, including facilitating marketing opportunities.
The visible outcomes of significant investments in infrastructure include the development of two smart cities in Jammu and Srinagar, as well as the upgrading of sports infrastructure. Efforts to develop alternative tourist destinations at the district level have led to a significant increase in tourism, with over two crore tourists visiting the UT. Innovative projects such as the Ski Ropeway are being sanctioned to elevate Jammu and Kashmir into a world-class tourist destination. Furthermore, the complete dismantling of cross-border terrorism has resulted in a sense of relief and freedom in the lives of ordinary Kashmiris. Shutdown calls have ceased, schools are operating regularly after decades, and separatist elements have been apprehended.
While the Government’s efforts towards the development of Jammu and Kashmir are commendable, some challenges lie ahead. Cross-border terrorism poses time-to-time hurdles. Jammu and Kashmir’s journey towards development is a testament to the resilience and determination of its people. The abrogation of Article 370 has opened up new possibilities for the region, laying the groundwork for economic prosperity and social progress. The transformation of Jammu and Kashmir has generated ample employment opportunities, signalling a promising future for the region. However, efforts for sustained development continue, with ongoing initiatives aimed at bringing further transformation to the area. Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to transforming Jammu and Kashmir has indeed translated into tangible changes, underscoring the Government’s dedication to the welfare and progress of the region. The PM’s visit reflects the Government’s commitment to fostering holistic development and ensuring a brighter future for the people of the region. By addressing the region’s socio-economic challenges and tapping into its immense potential, PM Modi is ensuring “Viksit Jammu and Kashmir.”
