Money laundering case: ED grills wife of Virbhadra Singh

NEW DELHI: Pratibha Singh, wife of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, was today questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case registered against her and others.

The ED had earlier issued summons to her to appear before the agency for investigation. But instead, she had sought exemption from appearing before the agency, citing personal reasons.

Yesterday, she moved the Delhi High Court, seeking protection from arrest by the agency till the next hearing of the said case on August 24.   ED had told the HC that they had no intention to arrest her, as of now.

The agency said they needed to record Ms Singh’s statement for investigation into the money laundering case and would inform the court before arresting her, if required.

The agency said recording of Ms Singh’s statement was essential after some important disclosures made by LIC agent Anand Chauhan, who had already been arrested by the ED last month.  ED has already attached assets worth about Rs eight crore of the Chief Minister, earlier this year.

Mr Singh has denied allegations of any wrongdoing by him and his family.  Last year, CBI had registered a case in this matter.  Subsequently, a case under provisions of Money Laundering laws was registered by the ED.

ED officials said they were probing allegations against Mr Singh and his family members of having amassed wealth of Rs 6.1 crore between 2009-11, while serving as the Union Minister of Steel. (AGENCIES)
