More problems in offing for commuters in Jammu

JAMMU, Oct 24: The commuters are all set to face more problems from the next month following the reopening of Darbar when around 25,000 vehicles will be added in the existing vehicular population of the winter capital.
Official sources said that additional 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles, mostly cars will start plying on Jammu roads following reopening of Darbar here on November 5, 2012. This number will increase further after the winter vacations in the Valley as large number of people will move to Jammu to escape harsh weather conditions.
With the addition of such a large number of vehicles, the commuters will have to face numerous problems as Traffic Police is already under-staffed and would face difficulties in regulating the traffic. Even SSP Traffic Jammu admitted that regulating traffic following reopening of Darbar in Jammu has always remained a daunting task.
Mr Singh informed that 80 Traffic cops, who were on Darbar duty at Summer capital will be reporting back in the Winter Capital within days, adding, that the department is also trying to fill the vacant points so as to ensure smooth movement of vehicles.
However, whether 80 additional cops would help in regulating additional 25,000 vehicles is a million dollar question before the SSP Traffic. The influx of thousands of vehicles will surely create problems for the commuters especially when Traffic Police is still trying its level best to ensure 100 per cent adherence to newly installed traffic lights system and jumping of signals has not been fully checked so far.
In order to minimize the inconvenience to the commuters, the Traffic Police has started erecting new road dividers.
In response to a question, SSP Traffic said that after the installation of traffic lights, over 85 percent achievement has been made in management of vehicular movement in the Winter Capital. “Around 12,000 vehicles pass to and fro from the most busiest point Bikram Chowk in one hour daily and we have achieved a major success in regulating the vehicular movement there after installation of traffic signals”, he added.
Responding to another question, he said that strict action would be taken against the violators of traffic rules and a fine of Rs 1,000 imposed on those, who will jump the traffic signals.
