Moroccan navy rescues 91 migrants off Atlantic coast

Rabat, June 20 : The Moroccan navy rescued 91 sub-Saharan migrants off the Atlantic coast on Wednesday, the official MAP news agency reported, citing a statement from the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces.

The navy unit intercepted a boat heading to the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa, during an operation 189 km southwest of Dakhla, the statement said.

The migrants, all from sub-Saharan countries, were handed over to the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie for standard administrative procedures after receiving first aid care, it added.

Morocco has become a transit hub for some West African migrants aiming to reach Europe. (Agencies)
