JAMMU, July 10: A major tragedy was averted in Jammu after an unexploded mortar shell was found near a shopping complex which was later defused by Army’s bombs disposal squad.
“An unexploded mortar shell was recovered from a drain near a shopping complex in Shankar Nagar area yesterday evening,” reports said.
They said that the object was an 81 mm mortar shell used by the Army.
“The police informed the Army unit of 19 Grenadiers about the bomb. The Army removed the shell from the area and later safely destroyed it in the army station Sunjwan,” they added.
Official sources said they were investigating how a mortar shell, used by the Army, reached a civilian area.
“It seems that the bomb might have been washed away by yesterday’s flooding in the area,” they said.
