JAMMU, Nov 16: The Jammu and Kashmir Police today claimed to have busted a motor vehicle theft gang in the East and South Subdivisions of Jammu South Zone.
A police official said that a total of 20 stolen vehicles, including motorcycles, scooters, trucks, and cars, valued at over Rs 1 crore, have been recovered from the gang members.
According to him, several suspects have been arrested in connection with the thefts.
The police official said that the operation began after a formal complaint was lodged on October 25, 2024 at the Bahu Fort Police Station by one Pritam Singh, reporting the theft of his scooty.
According to him, a case FIR number 268/2024 was accordingly registered and further investigations revealed a pattern of similar thefts in the area.
He said, on November 6, 2024, another complaint was filed by one Suraj Kumar regarding theft of his Royal Enfield motorcycle, leading to the registration of another FIR number 285/2024 under the relevant sections of the law.
Thereafter, a special investigation team, led by SDPO East DySP Sheezan Bhat and SDPO South Kartik Shrotriya, under the guidance of SP South Ajay Sharma and SSP Jammu Joginder Singh was formed to tackle the case, said the police official.
According to him, the team analysed CCTV footages, gathered technical data, and identified potential suspects.
This led to the arrest of two individuals identified as Dheeraj Singh of Kanji House, Gummat, Jammu, and Hem Raj of Ramkote, Kathua.
During sustained questioning, the police official said that Hem Raj confessed to his involvement in the theft of Scooty mentioned in FIR number 268/2024 and Dheeraj Singh admitted to his role in multiple vehicle thefts.
Based on their disclosures, the police recovered several stolen vehicles, including motorcycles, scooters, and a truck worth more than Rs 1 crore.
Further investigations are ongoing as the police expect to make more arrest and recover additional stolen vehicles in the near future.
