LEH, Apr 19: Member of Parliament, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal visited the construction site of the National Institute of Sowa Rigpa (NISR) at Saboo to review the progress and expressed his satisfaction over the progress made in the construction, today.
The Executive Engineer, CPWD briefed about the construction work and assured him about the completion of academic block within this season. The MP lauded Dr. Padma Gyurmet, Director of NISR, and all the concerned executing agencies for their hard work during the visit.
Before visiting the construction site, the Member Parliament interacted with the faculty and students of the Institute who come across the Himalayan States of India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Ladakh for pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Sowa Rigpa.
He expressed his appreciation for the institute’s efforts in providing quality education and research opportunities in the field of Sowa Rigpa and also assured his full cooperation to develop the Institute as a centre of excellence for Sowa-Rigpa.
Director, Dr. Padma Gyurmet thanked the MP for his constant support for Sowa-Rigpa and National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa. He also thanked the Prime Minister for recent approval for creation of 45 posts for the Institute.
The MP urged the NISR to support and promote the traditional Amchi (Mediciner) and Onpo (Astrologer) systems which have been in practice since ancient times. Additionally, he requested the NISR to create documentation regarding the available hot springs of hydrotherapy in the Union Territory of Ladakh to preserve and promote traditional wisdom.
He mentioned that the University Grants Commission has recognized Bachelor of Sowa Rigpa Medicine and Surgery (BSRMS) in Bhoti language under the specified degrees, which is a major step towards promoting this ancient system of medicine.
The MP urged the Government to continue the support and fund for the development of traditional systems of medicine, including Sowa Rigpa, in the country. The Government’s recognition and support will be critical in preserving and promoting traditional wisdom while advancing scientific research and development in the field of traditional medicine, he asserted.
