SRINAGAR: The historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed for the sixth day on Saturday due to accumulation of several feet of snow and slippery road conditions.
Hundreds of vehicles, including those stranded for the past three days, left Kashmir valley for winter capital this morning as only one-way traffic will continue to ply on 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
There was several feet of snow accumulated on the 86-km-long historic road at several places, including Pir-ki-Gali. The snow has frozen due to which the road, which is seen as an alternative to Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, has become very slippery, a traffic police official said here.
He said the district administration from both sides of Gali are making arrangements to clear the snow. However, there is very remote chance of resumption of traffic on the road which remains closed for six winter months due to heavy snowfall and threat of avalanches.
Large number of vehicles, including trucks, remained stranded on the highway on both sides of Gali. Traffic will not be allowed till weather and road condition improves, he said.
He said the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the only all weather road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of country was through for one-way traffic.
Today, traffic will ply from Kashmir to Jammu and no vehicle, including security force convoy, would be allowed from opposite direction, he said.
Hundreds of vehicles, including trucks carrying fruit and empty oil tankers, which were stranded at Qazigund and other places on this side of the Jawahar tunnel due to snowfall, left for Jammu this morning. Large number of vehicles, including carrying passengers, left different parts of the valley for Jammu. (AGENCIES)
