Muktishi Sharma new star on Jammu’s classical vocal horizon

Local talent makes mark in Academy’s Vocal music recital

JAMMU, Apr 25: The age-old Indian classical vocal music tradition of the city of temples has got a new hope in Muktishi Sharma, who gave a display of her immense talent at the recital organized by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, culture and Languages, at Government Women College (GWC) Auditorium, Gandhi Nagar, here today.
Today’s music program in which senior artistes like Kailash Mehra and Delhi based Meenakshi Prasad also participated, started with Muktishi Sharma singing ‘chhota khayal’ in Raag Yaman, which was followed by Sufiana Kalam in Punjabi.
She impressed the audience with lyrical quality of her voice and style of presentation that spoke about her commitment and dedication towards the grand tradition of classical music.
Muktishi Sharma, a student of 2nd year in GWC, Parade, is the daughter of daughter of Ashu Sharma and granddaughter of Ram Dutt, well-known personality of Jammu, popularly remembered as ‘Dowani Aale Hakim’.
Kailsah Mehra, the veteran singer of the state, started with ‘Jatt’ in Raag Sorath, which was followed by ‘dadra’ in Raag Mishr Khamaj and ‘Chaturang’’ in Raag Yaman. She also sang a bhajan by Kabir and a song in Dogri. Meenakshi Prasad, from Delhi, who belongs to Banaras Gharana, started with ‘dadra’, which was followed by a bhajan of Kabir.
Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister of Tourism and Culture, the chief guest of the function, The chief guest, minister for tourism and culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora., was all praise for the Academy, which made all out efforts in organizing the vocal music concert.
Praising the voice of teenage singer, Mukteshi Sharma, the minister said that the Academy should keep on encouraging young and talented singers like her. The audience appreciated all the songs with perfectly timed applause.
Besides other dignitaries, commissioner secretary, tourism and culture
and secretary Academy, Atal Dulloo, and former secretary Academy, Prof. Rita Jitendra also graced the delightful musical evening.
Academy’s additional secretaries, Savita Bakshi and Shamima Akhter and Chief Editor Gojari, Javaid Rahi, were also present on the occasion.
